Popular business card production techniques part 1

Have you ever wondered how „convex” business cards are made? On our blog you can read interesting facts about the printing industry.

Embossing/Stamping

Embossing and debossing, also called dry stamping, are very similar techniques, although they produce completely different effects. In both cases, the selected printing element is embossed using a special matrix/male which, by hitting the paper, causes it to become convex on one side or concave on the other. Patrica, the antonym of matrix, is its negative. The protruding elements of the business card on one side have similar recesses on the other. Made of a harder and more resistant material, it is a model of the original from which dies are made, i.e. cold or hot copies, by forging or pressing.

The difference between embossing and embossing is that in the case of embossing the structure of the paper is interfered with, while in the embossing process the print is fluffed only on one side – the reverse side remains smooth. When using both techniques, be careful that the space between the letters is larger than usual, because they may merge with each other during the embossing or embossing process. These techniques make printed characters appear smaller and selected elements may lose their sharpness. Nevertheless, both techniques undoubtedly refine the business card – the high quality of workmanship gives it an elegant and original character.
